Message from Mount Vernon District Supervisor, Gerry Hyland
Recently, there has been a rash of vehicle thefts in the Mount Vernon Magisterial District, especially in the Lorton community.
Captain Joe Hill, Commander of the West Springfield District Station, wants all residents, not just in the Lorton community but in all areas, to be aware of this and to take the following precautions:
- Do not leave an unattended vehicle running anywhere, even in your own driveway. Vehicles are being stolen from driveways while warming up on cool mornings. Never leave your car running unattended!
- Do not leave any valuables inside your vehicle. It is too tempting for thieves.
Together we can prevent auto theft.
Yours in public service,
Gerry Hyland |

This summer, your Board of Directors solicited proposals from local property management firms for the continued management of Mount Air. We’re very happy to report that we have selected Summit Management Services, Inc as the community’s new management agent. This change is effective December 1, 2011.

On Tuesday, January 24, 2012 the 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) from Fort Myer will be in the Southwest area of Fort Belvoir Military Post doing training with their ceremonial cannon. Training is specifically for the Old Guard's Salute Guns Platoon, and WILL include occasional blank-shell firing of the guns between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The southwest area of Fort Belvoir is across from Inlet Cove to the north, and Mason Neck to the west/southwest. To minimize sound intrusion, the cannon will fire to the south.

(Thanks to Cindy Smith of the Newington Civic Association for providing this information)
There is at least one family of coyotes living in the wooded area behind Levelle Dupell Park off Newington Road. A coyote was observed recently on Franklin Road. We should expect that these animals may occasionally come into the Mount Air community.
Do not feed the coyotes because they will lose their fear of humans. The coyotes provide rodent control and provide "clean up" services of dead animals. In general, coyotes provide benefits, but we need to be mindful of their presence. Pets and children should be supervised when outdoors.
